Welcome to My Sister’s Yarn Shop |

|
January 30, 2012 — As you read this, Jennifer and I will be cruising into warmer weather to belatedly celebrate her 50th birthday.
Each of the seven Rork Girls has done something special to celebrate our 50th birthdays. Four of us had spa days with the sisters and two of us went to Chicago with some of the sisters for their celebrations.
Jennifer decided she would like to get really serious and take a warm-weather cruise, so we are meeting one other sister in Port Canaveral for a four-night cruise to the Bahamas.
We’ve left the shop in the very capable hands of Barb, Kathy, Jenn and Dave this week. We’ll miss the shop, but it will be nice to get away with some of the sisters for a few days.
Barb and Jenn are planning an exciting five-session workshop that will start the first Saturday in March.
They were fortunate to take several classes with Sally Melville, the author of “The Knit Stitch,” “The Purl Stitch,” “Color” and several other knitting books. After the classes they decided they wanted to share with our customers “What We Learned from Sally Melville.”
In the workshops you will learn how to select yarns, color, and stitch patterns to make a “Perfect Tee.” The full course runs 12 hours, so you can count on learning a lot in this class!
Towards the end of February you’ll start seeing some new spring yarns arriving in the shop. We’re planning on having another yarn tasting when they all arrive. |

See you back in the shop Saturday, Feb. 4!

January 12, 2012 — Sunshine this week, and no snow on the ground as I write this. I should be hunkered down with my winter knitting and looking forward to seeing and selecting the new spring yarns.
It’s hard to think that way without our normal January weather. But since there’s snow on the way, I plan to nestle myself in my knitting chair this weekend and work on a few of those winter projects.
I have a cape that’s almost finished using SMC Tweed Deluxe. I’m also working on a pullover sweater featured in Vogue Knitting Winter 2011/2012 page 57. It has a twist in the front of the sweater to give it a fun shape. I’m trying out a local alpaca on that sweater.
I’ve just finished meeting with two of my yarn reps. Crystal Palace has one new yarn for this spring that I ordered:
Aria has a unique structure. It has two alternating yarns in one ball, changing every few yards from a nubbly mochi slow stripe wool wrapped with a fine thread to a soft chenille printed in colors to coordinate with the wool portion. The effect is a changing color and texture with lovely effects.
Rowan also had a few new yarns for the spring that I ordered:
Creative Linen is a lovely summer yarn in a blend of 50% linen and 50% cotton. It’s soft to wear, and we’ll be carrying all 20 of the beautiful shades in which it’s available. |

Summerspun is a beautiful yarn in a 50% merino wool and 50% cotton blend. The yarn is made by twisting a printed cotton end and a melange wool end together, resulting in a wonderful subtle striping effect. Available in 12 lovely shades (I’ve ordered seven), Summerspun is a joy to knit and crochet.
Finally, I placed an order for the following new SMC yarns:
Reflect is a cotton viscose blend. The viscose gives it a pretty sheen. I have ordered all 10 colors.
Violana Colori is a cotton and model blend. It’s a DK weight. I think it will be a great choice for a summer tee.
We’ll have another yarn tasting for the new yarns when they arrive.
Back to the needles for now.

December 5, 2011 — Thanksgiving has passed and we now have less than three weeks to go until Christmas.
We’re all staying busy at My Sister's Yarn Shop during the holiday season. Barb has just finished another session of beginning knitting (Knitting I class), so we now have three more new knitters.
Jenn is busily helping her classes finish up their holiday gifts. Jennifer is knitting a jacket for a shop sample with Rowan Colourspun, as well as helping forlorn non-yarnies select gifts for their loved ones.
Dave is keeping the floor clean, moving displays and updating the website for us. |
