Welcome to My Sister’s Yarn Shop

MSYS Logo

July 12, 2010 — Last week I needed  a small project to finish amidst my ongoing larger projects to feel a sense of accomplishment that we all need from time to time.

I decided to whip up a knitted beaded necklace (photo on home page).   I chose the pattern Aile’ written by Laura Nelkin.

Laura designs a lot of her patterns with Schaefer Yarns in mind.  This pattern is written for both sport/DK and lace weight yarns.

I was able to finish it and block it in two days.  Yeah!  I finished something.  I’ll keep it on display in the shop in case anyone is interested in a project that can be completed in a few hours.

Now back to the Gedifra sweater in Extra Soft Merino.

June 18, 2010 — We’re back!  Dave and I went to Myrtle Beach with my sister Jennifer and her family for a week.  It was great fun as well as nice and relaxing.

I was able to visit five yarns shops along the way.  I like to chat with other shop owners and see what kind of yarns they carry.  Dave likes to check out the floors, displays and lighting.

The choices of wool were fewer, but the lighter cottons, bamboo, soy and corn fibers were plentiful.  In one shop, one of the ladies said she would never wear a sweater in the summer.  I think I’m fortunate to live in Ohio where the seasons change and we can use so many different types of yarns.

This past Sunday, Jennifer, Anne, Jenn and I went to Columbus for the TNNA Yarn Market.  What a day!  Aisle after aisle of

yarns, patterns, books and notions.

I ordered new yarns from Rowan, Berroco and Crystal, to name a few.  Rowan has come out with a new line from fabric designer Amy Butler called Belle Organic Yarn.  It’s 50% organic wool and 50% organic cotton, and comes in 16 colors of dk weight and 12 colors of aran weight.

This yarn, along with a companion book of patterns, will be in our shop within the next few weeks.  I’ll send out an e-mail and update the website when it arrives.

Among the other new yarns I ordered are the new Berroco Remix Chunky and Malabrigo Rasti chunky.  These and more will be arriving mid-July through the end of August.  I hope you come in and pet the new yarns.

May 27, 2010 — I finished my Rowan Revive sweater a few weeks ago.  It turned out great.  I’m wearing it as I type this.  It is sooooo comfy.  I also finished a beaded scarf with Kramer’s Silk and Silver.  It’s being blocked and will be in the shop and on display next week.

We’re making coasters with the cancer logo on them for Green Relay for Life on June 18 and 19.  Friday the 18th they’ll be holding a survivors dinner, and each survivor will receive a hand knit coaster. I’d like to thank Edna, Darla, Jean, Suzanne, and Jennifer for helping with this program.

The early fall issue of Vogue Knitting came in this week, and it has some beautiful patterns.  It seems as if the color trends are grey, brown, dark red, and purple.  There are also some very nice lace garments.

Dave and I are planning a little time away

from the shop from Friday, June 4, through Friday, June 11.  MSYS will stay open in the capable hands of Anne for that week, but with reduced hours of 11:00 am to 5:00 pm on Monday through Thursday, June 7-10.

Our regular hours will remain in effect on Fridays (10:00-4:00) and Saturdays (10:00-3:00).  There will be no Knit with Jenn or Jennifer classes that week as both of them will also be taking a break.  Details are shown in our Calendar section.

One of the things we’ll be doing that week is attending the TNNA show in Columbus.  In my next post I’ll update you with all the news from the yarn industry.

I’m off to find my next project. Have a happy and safe Memorial Day weekend.

May 3, 2010 — I didn’t make my goal of having my Rowan sweater done by May first.  A few other projects cropped up along the way.

Yesterday I knit up a spa facecloth in Rowan Hand Knit Cotton.  Along with a sheep-shaped soap, it would make a great Mother’s Day or end of the school year teacher gift for under $12.

Last Wednesday my yarn rep from Cascade was in to show us the new fall yarns.  I had Jenn, Anne, Jennifer and Kathy come in and help choose colors.

I wanted to make sure that we have a good selection of colors for everyone and not just my favorites.  They will be arriving in August, just in time to start your fall projects.

We have some new classes with Kathy scheduled for summer.  They include a Lace Throw, Side to Side Sweater, Slip
