Welcome to My Sister’s Yarn Shop

MSYS Logo

through Friday, June 11.  MSYS will stay open in the capable hands of Anne for that week, but with reduced hours of 11:00 am to 5:00 pm on Monday through Thursday, June 7-10.

Our regular hours will remain in effect on Fridays (10:00-4:00) and Saturdays (10:00-3:00).  There will be no Knit with Jenn or Jennifer classes that week as both of them will also be taking a break.  Details are shown in our Calendar section.

One of the things we’ll be doing that week is attending the TNNA show in Columbus.  In my next post I’ll update you with all the news from the yarn industry.

I’m off to find my next project. Have a happy and safe Memorial Day weekend.

May 3, 2010 — I didn’t make my goal of having my Rowan sweater done by May first.  A few other projects cropped up along the way.

Yesterday I knit up a spa facecloth in Rowan Hand Knit Cotton.  Along with a sheep-shaped soap, it would make a great Mother’s Day or end of the school year teacher gift for under $12.

Last Wednesday my yarn rep from Cascade was in to show us the new fall yarns.  I had Jenn, Anne, Jennifer and Kathy come in and help choose colors.

I wanted to make sure that we have a good selection of colors for everyone and not just my favorites.  They will be arriving in August, just in time to start your fall projects.

We have some new classes with Kathy scheduled for summer.  They include a Lace Throw, Side to Side Sweater, Slip Stitch Christmas Stocking, Baby Nicholas Sweater, and a Sampler Sock.

Time to get back to the Rowan Sweater!

Happy knitting and crocheting!

April 19, 2010 — You’ve probably already noticed that Opal’s new Kaleidoskop Sockenwolle is featured on our main page.

I really like the new spring colors.  The turquoise color 2994 and the purple 2992

really pop.  Come in and see the sample socks that just arrived today.

As many of you know, I haven’t been much of a sock knitter.  But I just finished my first Malabrigo sock in the Arbol colorway.

I love this yarn so much that I’ve already cast on and started the second sock so I won’t fall victim to the dreaded single sock syndrome.

My other current project is a summer short-sleeve sweater using Rowan Purelife Recycled Silk, Cotton and Viscose.  The pattern I’m using is called Rhubarb.

I’m also using the Kollage square needles for the first time on a garment.  They are so comfortable to use that I seem to be able to knit longer with them.  I started the sweater last week and am already halfway up the back.

I hope to have the sweater done by May 1st.  I’ll let you know how it turns out and post a picture of it.

Happy knitting and crocheting for now.

April 7, 2010 — I guess it’s about time to get serious about updating our “About Us” section, because there are more and more of “us” to be introduced.

Our earliest customers know that we opened in November 2008 with just me and my husband, Dave.  My sister, Jennifer Shaw, soon came on board to help with both sales and instructional classes.

Jenn Lewis started teaching a Knit With Jenn class last year, and has now expanded to several classes on Mondays and Thursdays.

Donnamarie Smith also joined us last year, and her Crochet With Donnamarie classes have become a regular feature on Saturdays at MSYS.

When Miss Chickpea’s Funky Fibers in Hudson closed last year, we not only saw an influx of new customers, but also the addition of two talented and experienced ladies to our shop.

Kathy Disantis started teaching advanced knitting classes for us earlier this year.  In

addition to being one of the most popular knitting instructors in Ohio, Kathy is also well known for her partnership with Dianne Rodabaugh in Ewe & I Originals.

Anne Mancine, who many of you may know from Miss Chickpea’s, is our most recent addition.  Anne joined our staff just last month, and her knowledge and experience in the yarn business is already helping make my life a little easier.

So you can see that we have a lot of work to do to update our “About Us” section with photos and background on the whole MSYS gang.

March 25, 2010 — What’s happened to My Sister’s Yarn Shop’s Newsletter that used to be here?

Simple.  After giving it a little more thought, I realized that newsletters are for big companies and corporations, and what we have here is a small, informal yarn shop.

A blog is nothing more than an informal newsletter for the web.  But instead of the big chore of creating a major publication every few months, I can easily update this blog any time there’s something to say.

I’ll try not to waste your time with trivial thoughts, and only post here what I think may be of interest to more than just a few of our customers.

But since we’re really informal around here, please feel free to tell me if you want to hear more from me, or if you want me to spend more time tending to my knitting.

That’s all for now.

Fall, 2009 — Following is our first and only newsletter converted to blog format:

Our Farmhouse Yarns Visit — Dave and I recently closed the shop for a week and traveled east.  One of our stops was at Hopyard Spinnery, home of Farmhouse Yarns, in Connecticut.

Owner Carol Martin was gracious with her time and knowledge.  She walked us around the farm to meet her sheep, and
